Abstract

Objective: To evaluate and analyze the pattern of children with foreign bodies in the throat, ears and nose with review of the techniques for removal in the emergency department.

Methods: To determine the incidence and outcomes of foreign body in the throat, ears and in the nose, a review of all children with foreign body swallow, in the ears and in the nose from Sept 1, 2008 to May 30, 2010 was done. The source and the study group (N-72) were subjected to radiologic, otoscopic and inspection by nasal speculum and finding specific to each location of foreign bodies were well documented.

Results: During the study period, 72 children victims of foreign bodies in the throat, ear and in the nose were included in the study. Of these 44(61.1%), 28(38.9%) were M and F children respectively. The age range was from 11 M  to 14 yrs of age with (mean= 4yrs). The most affected age group was between 0-5 yrs accounting for 46(63.9%) followed by the age group between 6-10 yrs accounting for (27.8%) of all cases. M 44(61.1%) were predominantly most affected than F 28(38.8%).

The common location of foreign bodies in this study was in the ears 45 (62.5%), in the throat 17(23.6%) and in the nose 10(13.9%) in the order of their frequency. Swallowed foreign bodies were successfully removed by Magill forceps.

Conclusion: Removal of foreign bodies in the ear, nose and throat is a common problem and can either be a frustrating or gratifying procedure, depending on outcomes.
